We were awarded by the English newspaper “The Guardian”, “one of the best cafes of The Nertherlands”. Well, that's a big compliment! We are happy with the visit of various people: the Regular Joe, the members of the bottle club, the princes of The Netherlands, the neighbours, people from the province, Amsterdammers, tourists and other types of people. Everyone is welcome. Status and titles don't count in our house, we are not interested in that. I also take care of cultural tours around the city center. This is a service for the guests of the tasting events. I tell people stories about canal houses, gevelstenen, canals, churches, squares and all the information that surrounds it. And, of course, I also include stories about the Red Light District and the ladies who work there.
“A good old one is gorgeous”
They serve more than sixty sorts of young and old genevers. Reason enough for the Genever Association to have added the tasting house 'In de Olofspoort' in de Nieuwebrugsteeg to their ranks as an “official genever cafe'”. The occasion got celebrated with a seaweed genever and a 'good' old one because categorisations are to be taken seriously here. Only the best of the best pass the test of the genever association. Under the Amsterdam's laureates: Oosterling and Wijnand Focking.

The connoisseurs know how to describe it in detail. You do not drink a good genever in one shot. You let it dance in your glass, you smell it and sip it, mindfully. “It is the art of enjoyment”, says Peter Wijbenga, who was present at the association's birth, nineteen (at the moment twentyfour ) years ago. He knows that there is still work to do when it comes to the reputation of young and old genever. “If you love a good whiskey, you are a connoisseur. If you say the same about genever, then you risk becoming 'the alcoholic'”. Too often, he still hears: “ Bah, genever, that's not for me”. But if I serve a good old one by the coffee to a guest of mine without saying what it is, they announce: “I have never drunk such a smooth cognac in my life”. 'In de Olofspoort' receives guests who are not acquainted with genever, either. “I only use genever to disinfect surfaces”. The experts will stand up for genever though. Here's how to 'lose your virginity' alcoholwise. With an old matured genever of course: “Not cold. That doesn't taste like anything. Now, this drink is absolutely gorgeous”. Another convert. Jacques d'Ancona is one of the aficionados who, as a prominent ambassador of the association, managed to brave the high temperatures and travel here from the north of the country. Okay, he is more of a Campari-juice or a gin-tonic sort of person, but a good genever also makes it to his stomach on the right moment. He included in his speech a cafe quote from Simon Carmiggelt. The one of the old man who carefully brought the calyx to his mouth and lovingly addressed the liquid: “Find a good seat. It's going to be full tonight”.

Genever lovers pay hommage to In de Olofspoort – De Telegraaf
De Telegraaf Friday 23 July 2013 – Stan Huygens Journal – The newspaper of awoken Netherlands
The Amsterdam's tasting house In de Olofspoort, located right before you enter the Red Light District from the Central Station, has been attracting the lovers of Dutch spirits for years. But it has taken until now, the year that In de Olofspoort iscelebrating the cafe's 25th jubilee( now our 30th ) for the Genever Association to acknowledge them as an “official genever cafe”. Peter Wijbenga, co-founder of the Genever Association, assured the audience that In the Olofspoort had been considered for the distinction much earlier. This acknowledgement is very special because the society founded in 1995 by Dutch distillers has but distinguished not more than twenty-something cafes in total. Among them De Pintelier in Groningen, Sjinkerij de Bobbel in Maastricht, Tasting house de Ooievaar in Rotterdam, Tastings Caruso in Roosendaal, and Boshuis Venkraai in Oisterwijk. Member Jacques d'Ancona spoke to the audience as an ambassador of the society, after which director Joep Stassen from SpiritsNL, the association for importers and producers of spirits in TheNetherlands. Riny Reiken: On the 27th juli 1988 it became a tasting house for genevers and liquors. In 2018 it is time to party together 30 years working and sharing memories In de Olofspoort.
